Power Hungry: The Call For Equal Gender Representation, From Artistry To Industry

While female representation in the music industry has been growing steadily over the past few years, there are still structural gender imbalances at every level. In business, there is a lack of females in traditional positions of power - there are hardly any female CEOs, yet there’s a disproportionately high number of women in supporting roles. Only 30% of public board members on peak music bodies in Australia are women. What are the reasons for this? How does this same pattern flow across to the performance and production fields? This panel will address this status quo and analyse other areas in which the ongoing pursuit for parity needs to be met.

Simona Castricum is a Melbourne musician, DJ and producer. Her beat driven and textural music express experiences of gender non-conformity, emotional abandonment and isolation. Simona’s 2016 album ’#TriggerWarning40’ is critically considered a breakthrough release - her first through Melbourne’s LISTEN Records. She is a teacher in architectural practice at the University Of Melbourne School Of Design and is a freelance writer published in The Guardian, i-D, Vice and Archer Magazine.

Claire Collins is the director of Bossy Music, a leading management & PR company based in Sydney. She manages the careers of D.D Dumbo, Art vs Science, and Kagu.
