Hip hop celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2023, a milestone that has already seen icons and the current vanguard of artists be celebrated for their contributions to the genre. In Australia, it’s never been a more exciting time for hip hop, as a result of some true innovators paving the way.

The way hip hop has evolved and grown from its beginnings in the Bronx, through to it becoming the apex of pop culture and success it is today, is something sure to be talked about in years to come.

But, seeing as it celebrates such an important milestone as it does in 2023, this BIGSOUND panel pulls the curtain back some more on the history of hip hop; detailing its continued rise in the face of oppression, the creation of new sub-genres and its role as key meeting point for artists who have important messages and stories to tell.
